The problem
Before Daminion, the ADInstruments team of medical illustrators relied on storing digital assets in folders on a network drive, which proved especially inefficient when it came to searching for specific assets.
The medical illustrators manage a diverse range of media files with the primary focus being on static images, particularly vector images. In addition to these, they also store videos, standard text documents, subtitle files for videos, and various other file types. Within the collection of images, a significant portion comprises editable Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop files, which are exported as SVGs or PNGs for use on websites.
With such a diversity of different file formats, storing everything in network folders and relying solely on Windows Explorer for search proved to be highly inefficient and time-consuming.
The team needed a more streamlined solution for incorporating metadata into files, managing essential information, and simplifying the processes of searching, categorizing, and locating the extensive array of images at their disposal. Windows File Explorer fell short of meeting these requirements.
How Daminion helped
Since implementing Daminion, the workflow of the medical illustrators' team has experienced a significant enhancement, largely attributed to the invaluable feature of access control. Daminion's check-in and check-out system is utilized to ensure that only one person can work on a file at a given time, effectively preventing conflicts.
Furthermore, the capability to incorporate extensive metadata into files and uphold a meticulously organized file system has proven to be an indispensable cornerstone of their workflow. This feature empowers team members to establish a comprehensive categorical structure, freeing them from the confines of relying solely on keywords for tagging.
Workflow with Daminion
When I need to modify an existing image, I access Daminion to check out the editable Illustrator or Photoshop file. After making the necessary alterations, I export PNGs or SVGs.
Following this, I check the Illustrator file back into Daminion, import the new SVGs, and include any required metadata such as a lesson name and any relevant collection, such as biology or chemistry at that stage.
This process ensures that our assets are organized and accessible.
